Supporting information for online hackney carriage driver licence renewal

Supporting documents

The renewal driver process has now changed, and we now request you upload the following documents before you can submit your application:

  • A new and unused DVLA check code
  • Proof of your Right to Work in the UK
  • A copy of your current driving licence
  • A photograph of you, to be used on your badge
  • HMRC Tax check code

After you have submitted your application, we may require additional documents from you to support your application.

All additional document requests from our team will be sent to you via email; please ensure you respond as soon as possible to prevent any avoidable delays.

DVLA check code

  • New DVLA check codes can be generated
  • Please provide a screenshot of the check code if possible – this will reduce errors when manually copying the code
  • Do not use the code yourself – DVLA check codes are a single use item

Right to Work in the UK

We can accept the following documents as evidence of your Right to Work in the UK

  • British / Irish Passport
  • Right to Work Share Code, generated via your e-visa account
  • UK Birth Certificate, accompanied by an official letter / document issued by the government which quotes your National Insurance number

We no longer accept Biometric Residence Permits as valid evidence of Right to work.

Driving Licence

  • Ensure the address on your driving licence matches your application form
  • Only upload a copy of your current driving licence
  • Ensure you upload both the front and rear of your driving licence

HMRC Tax Check code

Please refer to the guidance published on our tax conditionality page for further information on how to generate a HMRC tax check code.

A photograph of you, to be used on your badge

To keep you badge updated, we ask that you upload a photo of you with your application. You can take a photo when uploading your documents, or upload from your device.

Please ensure when taking your photograph that:

  • It is in a “Selfie” format, ensuring just your face and shoulders is in frame
  • Upload a recent photo of you
  • Ensure the photo is taken on a light-coloured background
  • Keep the background clear – no clutter, people or objects
  • Face the camera straight on – no tilting or side angles
  • Use a neutral facial expression
  • Remove any hats, sunglasses, hoods or headphones – glasses are permitted if there is no glare and your eyes are visible
  • Do not use any filters or edited photos
  • Avoid strong shadows, bright sunlight or lights directly behind you
